Small Business Spotlight: Urban Oreganics

Good morning, everyone! About a week and a half ago, I reached out to Urban Oreganics in search of the perfect handmade hygiene products. Bath bombs and sugar scrubs are easy to find online, but I was in search of basic hygiene items perfected by their crafty creators.

Urban Oreganics was founded in Portland, OR, in 2013 by Emily Silverstein. This beautiful shop features dry shampoos, lip butters, rosewater toner, makeup remover, cleansing bars, essential oil rollers, facial masks, and many more – all handmade with natural ingredients, of course!

The products speak for themselves, the quality is exquisite, and I will be buying all of my hygiene needs ONLY through small batch, all natural businesses (mainly this one).

After some serious browsing on their Etsy shop, here is what I settled on (thanks for the deal, UO!):

After a few short days of waiting, these three beauties arrived in the mail. Between us – I prepared for this arrival by not using deodorant the night before/morning of, and did not wash my hair for about a week (I’m sure it’s fine). I was ready.

D E O D O R A N T  C R E A M  –  Let me just get this out there: I have only had to apply this ONCE in the last 4 days, compared the twice a day with traditional roll on deodorant from the store. This was extremely easy to apply, and this will last for a good while! There was no overpowering scent or weird chalky feel to it; the cream seems to be the most dependable of all antiperspirants.

D R Y  S H A M P O O  –  I don’t have to get my hair wet anymore, say whaaaat? This is extremely exciting news – just imagine my cheesy grin. I took an old makeup brush and dipped it into the shampoo powder (for light hair), and applied it to my DRY roots. I was a little generous with my first application, and took an extra minute to thoroughly brush it through. Volume – boosted! I loved the clean, refreshing result.

A C T I V A T E D  C H A R C O A L  C L E A N S I N G  B A R S  –  Activated charcoal is a magical ingredient; it whitens teeth, treats & prevents acne, deeply cleanses, prevents aging, and limitlessly more. I was so excited to try this item, and it did not fail to impress me. This was the ultimate treat for my skin!

ESCAPE TO VAVA’U: How did your vegan lifestyle influence you to begin a natural bath and beauty shop? When did this all begin?

URBAN OREGANICS: I became vegan in 2008, but it wasn’t until I was pregnant with my first child in 2013 that I really began looking into the toxic ingredients found in our commercial bath & skin care products. I made a vow to change my ways! And while on maternity leave, I dabbled with the idea of finding a way that allowed me to stay home with this new little child I created. And so, my company was born!

EV: From one DIYer to another, how difficult is it to manage/keep up with a successful Etsy store out of your home?

UO: I’m sure without kids it would be much easier! Ha! I’m super organized and am lucky enough to have a very supportive husband, so we make it work.

EV: What steps do you take within your business to minimize ocean pollution (single-use plastic, recycled material, etc.)? On a scale of 1 to 10, how important do you feel it is to be an eco-friendly business?

UO: It is extremely import and to me to be eco-friendly (10!!). I package all of my products in glass, buy ingredients in bulk, and ship only in paper/cardboard (no bubble wrap!).

EV: What goals/wishes do you have for Urban Oreganics in the next year?

UO: This little company has already come so much further than I ever would have imagined. I just go with the flow and let it take me where it will. Because I have another job, and now two little ones, I’m not trying to get HUGE, I just want to be able to support my family.

EV: Of all the products you offer, what is your favorite? Are there any new products coming soon that you’d like to share?

UO: My favorite is the “detox” cleansing grains. It’s a mix of gluten-free oats, clay, and activated charcoal – which creates a dry facial cleanser. You then mix it with your liquid of choice (water, tea, orange juice, olive oil, etc) to make your cleanser fresh for each use. I’m constantly creating new products. Nothing specific in the works yet, but stay tuned!

So, as you can see, this store is pretty awesome.
